EV Charger Installation Checklist (Before You Start)

Before installing a home EV charger, a few basic checks help ensure the process is smooth and completed in one visit. Most of these are straightforward and are used to confirm suitability rather than to create extra work.

First, confirm where the car is normally parked overnight. The charger should be located close to this position so the cable can reach comfortably without crossing walkways or access routes.

Next, identify where the fuse board is located and make sure it is accessible. Installers need clear access to assess capacity and complete the connection safely. If the fuse board is locked away or difficult to reach, this should be flagged in advance.

Check that there is a clear route for cabling between the fuse board and the charger location. This does not need to be visible or intrusive, but installers need a practical path that avoids unnecessary obstacles.

If your charger uses an app or smart scheduling features, ensure there is a reasonable Wi-Fi signal where the charger will be installed. Poor connectivity can usually be addressed, but it is helpful to identify this early.

If you are applying for a grant, confirm that you have completed the required application steps before installation. Grant approval is usually needed before work begins.

Finally, take note of anything unusual about the property, such as shared parking, a management company, or restricted access. Flagging these early helps avoid delays.

Completing these checks does not mean you need to solve everything yourself. Their purpose is to make sure installers can assess and plan the installation properly before arriving on site.
