Energia Night Rates Rise 28% from 12 October: What It Costs EV Drivers
Energia is raising night and EV charging rates by up to 30% from 12 October 2026, so EV drivers in Ireland who charge overnight will pay noticeably more. The headline increase is 4.73% on the average electricity bill, but the EV night rate rises far faster than day rates. At the time of writing (October 2026), a typical driver on a standard smart tariff faces around €160 extra a year on charging alone, before VAT.
What Has Energia Changed?
Energia has announced increases to residential electricity and gas prices from 12 October 2026. Day rates on the EV plans are unchanged, while night and EV charge-time rates rise by 20% to 30%. The electricity standing charge also rises.
The rise follows higher wholesale and network costs. The CRU's approval of 2026/27 network charges shapes the cost base that every Irish supplier passes on to customers.
| Energia tariff | Rate until 11 Oct | Rate from 12 Oct | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart (MCC16) night | 22.66c/kWh | 29.00c/kWh | +28% |
| Smart Data (MCC12) night | 21.25c/kWh | 27.20c/kWh | +28% |
| Day/Night meter night | 20.57c/kWh | 25.71c/kWh | +25% |
| EV Smart Drive charge-time | 9.61c/kWh | 12.49c/kWh | +30% |
| EV Smart Drive Plus charge-time | 11.25c/kWh | 13.50c/kWh | +20% |
| EV urban standing charge | €243.13/yr | €311.21/yr | +28% |

How Much More Will It Cost to Charge an EV at Night?
Take a driver covering 15,000 km a year in a mid-size EV using about 17 kWh per 100 km. That is roughly 2,550 kWh of home charging each year.
- Standard smart night rate: annual charging rises from about €578 to €740, an extra €162
- EV Smart Drive charge-time rate: annual charging rises from about €245 to €318, an extra €73
- EV standing charge: a further €68 a year on the EV tariffs
So even drivers on a dedicated EV plan see roughly €140 extra a year once the standing charge is included. Charging at home still costs far less than petrol or diesel, but the gap has narrowed.
Why Does the Night Rate Matter So Much for EV Owners?
Most Irish EV owners do the bulk of their charging at home overnight. That makes the night rate the single biggest number on their bill. A rise in the day rate barely touches them; a 28% jump in the night rate hits almost every kWh they put into the car.

How Can Irish EV Drivers Cut Their Charging Costs?
You cannot control supplier prices, but you can control when and where your electricity comes from.
- Compare EV tariffs now. Energia customers can switch plans or suppliers. Electric Ireland, SSE Airtricity, Bord Gáis Energy and Octopus Energy all offer time-of-use plans worth comparing.
- Use a smart charger to charge in the cheapest window. A smart charger schedules sessions automatically for the lowest-cost hours. Our guide on how to set up your EV charger for off-peak charging explains how.
- Charge from your own solar. Solar-compatible chargers divert surplus solar into the car during the day, at zero cost per kWh. Explore solar panels for Irish homes.
- Add battery storage. A battery stores cheap or free energy and reduces how much you buy at peak times. Learn more about home battery storage in Ireland.
At the time of writing (October 2026), SEAI offers up to €1,800 for solar PV and a new €600 grant for home batteries of 5 kWh or more, which shortens payback as tariffs rise.
Final Thoughts
The Energia increase shows the headline percentage rarely tells the full story for EV owners. Night and EV rates have risen 4 to 6 times faster than the average bill. Drivers who pair a smart charger with solar or a battery will feel these rises less each time a supplier changes its prices.
