Ireland's Hottest Summer on Record Drives 58% Solar Generation Surge
Ireland just experienced its hottest summer since records began in 1900, and solar panels across the country responded exactly as you would expect. Solar electricity generation jumped 58% compared to summer 2025, reaching 692 GWh and contributing up to 9.4% of Ireland's electricity mix in a single month.

Ireland's Record-Breaking Summer 2026
According to Met Éireann's climate statement, summer 2026 (June, July and August) posted an average temperature of 16.28°C, making it 0.09°C warmer than 2025 and 2.03°C above the long-term average. The peak came on 25 June when Athenry in County Galway hit 32.2°C, the highest single reading of the season.
July 2026 was particularly extreme. It became the second hottest July since 1900 and the driest July on record for Ireland. Cork Airport, Johnstown Castle, Moore Park and Oak Park all recorded their warmest and driest month ever. Johnstown Castle in Wexford broke the national record for the sunniest month on record with 332.4 hours of sunshine.
Six of the ten hottest summers in Ireland have occurred since 2001. Records are being broken with increasing frequency, and Met Éireann's climatologist Paul Moore confirmed what many already suspected: "Records are being toppled nearly every month because our climate is warming at a rapid pace now."
Solar Responded with Record Generation
While the heat made headlines, Ireland's solar panels were quietly delivering the kind of performance that changes the conversation about renewable energy.
According to EirGrid's latest figures, solar generation across June, July and August 2026 totalled 692 GWh, up 58% from 439 GWh during the same three months in 2025.

July's 9.4% solar share was a national record. Nearly one in every ten units of electricity consumed in Ireland that month came from solar panels.
Grid-scale solar farms also set new peak generation records. On 11 August at 12.41pm, solar hit 1.25 GW. Just 13 days later on 24 August at 11.43am, it reached 1.3 GW, enough to power nearly half a million homes at that moment.
Diarmaid Gillespie, EirGrid's Director of System Operations, called it "a significant time for the contribution of solar powered energy in Ireland."
"Notably in April we reached the milestone of over 1 GW of electricity provided by grid-scale solar power for the first time," he said. "This record has since been surpassed a number of times over the last months."
What This Means for Irish Homeowners

"However it is still expected to provide support to the power system during day light hours, even in the depths of winter."
Winter solar output in Ireland is typically 30% to 40% of summer output. A system generating 650 kWh in July might produce 200 kWh in December. But even in winter, Irish solar panels continue to generate electricity during daylight hours, especially on clear, cold days when panel efficiency actually improves.
