Solar Panels for a Dormer Bungalow in Ireland: A Guide

A dormer bungalow can take a solar array, and the dormers themselves are usually less of a problem than owners expect. The main roof slopes on either side of the dormers often have enough clear area for 10 to 14 panels, which is a 4 to 6 kWp system. What changes is the layout, the shading pattern and the mounting detail, so the survey matters more than it does on a simple semi-detached roof.

Can You Fit Solar Panels to a Dormer Bungalow?

Yes. A dormer bungalow has a main pitched roof, usually front and back, with dormer windows projecting from one or both slopes. The panels go on the main slopes, not on the dormer cheeks, and the aim is to keep them clear of the shadow the dormers cast.

The practical constraints are:

  • Clear roof area on the main slope, measured around chimneys, vents and the dormer frames.
  • Shading from the dormers themselves, especially early and late in the day.
  • Roof structure and access, since dormer bungalows often have converted attics and smaller rafters than a standard truss roof.
  • Cable routes from the roof to the inverter, which is usually in the attic, garage or utility room.

None of those rules out solar. They change the design.

Where Do the Panels Go on a Dormer Roof?

There are usually four options, and the survey will identify which suit your house.

Roof area Typical panel count Notes
Main front slope, south facing 6 to 12 Best output, avoid dormer shadow
Main rear slope, north facing 0 to 6 Low output, usually not worth it
East and west slopes 4 to 8 per side Spreads generation across the day
Garage or extension roof 2 to 6 Good for a split array if the main roof is tight

*Panel counts assume 400 to 450 W panels and a clear, unshaded area. An on-site survey is required to confirm.*

A common design puts one string on the front slope above and beside the dormers and a second string on the rear or a garage roof, with optimisers or microinverters so that shading on one section does not drag down the rest. That is more complex than a single south-facing string, but it is standard work for an installer who designs for dormer roofs regularly.

How Much Do Dormers Affect Output?

Dormers cast shadow, and shadow matters more than most people think. A panel that is partly shaded can lose a disproportionate share of its output, and a string of panels behaves like its weakest panel unless the system uses optimisers or microinverters.

The effect depends on the layout. A dormer in the middle of a south-facing slope casts a moving shadow that sweeps across part of the array. Panels placed away from that path perform close to a clear roof. Panels placed beside the dormer may lose 10% to 30% of their output at certain times, and badly placed ones can lose more.

The fix is design, not technology alone. Set the array out from the dormer shadow, split it into shorter strings, and use per-panel electronics where the roof is complex. A shading survey should be part of the quote, not an afterthought.

What Size System Suits a Dormer Bungalow?

Most dormer bungalows in Ireland can take 4 to 6 kWp, which is 10 to 14 panels at current panel sizes. That needs roughly 20 to 30 square metres of clear roof, and the main slope usually provides it once the dormers and chimney are excluded.

Output depends on orientation and shading. A clear 4 kWp system generates about 3,700 kWh a year in Ireland, and a 6 kWp system about 5,600 kWh. A dormer roof with some shading might deliver 10% to 20% less than those figures, which is why a site survey with a shading tool is more useful than a generic estimate.

If the main roof is too small, an east-west split or a garage roof can add capacity. A ground-mounted array may also be possible, though it is worth confirming grant eligibility before you rely on it.

What Do Grants and Costs Look Like?

At the time of writing October 2026, the SEAI solar PV grant is €700 per kWp up to 2 kWp, then €200 for each additional kWp up to 4 kWp, capped at €1,800. The home must have been built and occupied before 2025, and the grant is not open to a home that has already had solar PV funding at the same MPRN. The home battery grant is €600 for a battery of 5 kWh or more, and 0% VAT applies to residential solar supply and installation, including a battery fitted at the same time.

System size Approximate cost after grant Annual output
4 kWp About €5,200 to €5,600 Around 3,700 kWh
5 kWp About €6,000 Around 4,700 kWh
6 kWp About €6,800 to €7,200 Around 5,600 kWh

*Figures correct as of October 2026. Costs vary by roof complexity, access and equipment. Grant amounts are subject to change.*

Dormer roofs can cost a little more to install than a simple roof because of the split layout and the extra design work, but the difference is usually in the hundreds rather than the thousands. A battery adds about €3,500 to €5,500 installed and is worth considering if you are home in the evening, when a dormer roof's split generation is least useful without storage.

What Should You Check Before You Install?

The survey is the most important part of the job on a dormer bungalow. Ask for these checks.

  • A roof measurement that excludes dormers, chimney, vents and the 50cm edge zone required for planning exemption.
  • A shading analysis covering the dormers, trees and neighbouring buildings at different times of day.
  • A structural check, especially if the attic has been converted or the rafters are older.
  • A cable route from the roof to the inverter, and a frost-free, ventilated spot for the inverter and battery.
  • Confirmation that the grant application is submitted and approved before any work starts.
  • A post-works BER, which SEAI requires where solar PV is installed.

Final Thoughts

A dormer bungalow is a good solar candidate, provided the design respects the dormers rather than ignoring them. The main slopes usually carry a 4 to 6 kWp array, and the shading can be managed with layout, short strings and per-panel electronics. Get a survey that measures the clear area and models the shadow, and the rest of the decision is the same as any other Irish home: size to your consumption, apply for the grant before work starts, and add a battery if your evening use justifies it.
